Green Market Square

Green Market Square derives its name from its original use as a fruit and vegetable market. It was also used as a slave market and housed the well, which was Cape Town’s main water supply during the eighteenth century. After a period spent as a car park , the square has been returned to its original function as a market place. Today the square is a regular stop on the tourist itinerary, as the market sells tourist memorabilia from across Africa. We assisted Samantha Glen Landscape Architects (SGLA) in the design and implementation of the revival of this historic square. The aim of the project was to remove all cars and parking and to redesign the market layout and to do a public sculpture piece to celebrate the historic fountain.
