About Earthworks Landscape Architects
Approach and Philosophy
Earthworks Landscape Architects is based in Kalk Bay, Cape Town, South Africa, we design any landscape anywhere and are open to the challenges offered by difficult sites. We strive to achieve a balance between human needs and natural processes through our designs.
Our approach to design is to create spaces that can accommodate a broad range of uses and support both high and low intensity activity within a range of environments. Our designs are inspired by the intrinsic characteristics of the existing cultural and natural landscape patterns and processes, this ensures a contextually responsive and unique place is created on every site we design.
Our services include the design of urban parks, nature reserves, hotel landscapes, municipal resorts, streetscapes, commercial development landscapes, play parks, sports fields and skate parks. We also conduct visual impact assessments and do urban and environmental planning. We are currently involved in the Chiveve River rehabilitation in Beira, Mozambique; Non-Motorised Transport routes in Cape Town; the Agodi Gardens in Nigeria; Vanilla Gardens in Hawaii; Wynberg Park in Cape Town; the Durbanville Town Square and Top Yard Development in Cape Town; Tygerberg Hospital and Office development at the Karl Bremner Hospital; and the N2 Gateway Housing Project. We also recently completed the Camps Bay beachfront redevelopment.
We create places of beauty by incorporating different materials, the play of light, richness of nature and people. We have received several Design awards from the Institute of Landscape Architects in South Africa (ILASA), and are members of the South African Council for Landscape Architect Professionals (SACLAP).
Role of a Landscape Architect
The landscape architect is a designer of outdoor space. They bridge the gap between the engineering, planning and environmental aspects of a project by creating functional landscapes. A holistic approach is used to unify the natural, cultural and built environments present in a project. This is done via site analysis – involving mapping, public participation and subjective evaluation – which allows the architect to design people orientated spaces that are responsive to, and engage with, nature. The result is a sustainable, usable and resilient landscape, which importantly inspire people to appreciate their surroundings, help them relax and improve the health of our world.
Site analysis: The purpose of the baseline study is to develop an understanding of the site in the physical context, existing social, ecological and geological conditions and processes in the landscape as well as developing an understanding of the broader context in which the study area is located.
Concept The concept is our first vision for the project taking into consideration all of the information that we have learnt from the site analysis and client needs.
Design Principles: The design principles are concepts used to organise or arrange the structural elements of a design.
Sketch or Master Plan: The landscape masterplan addresses the conceptual treatment of outdoor spaces, integrating the natural and built environment. The masterplan encompasses the entire design of the site and is directly informed from conclusions from previous studies.
Tender and Construction Phase: At this stage the design has been finalised and a set of accurate plans are produced. From these plans and details a bill of quantities is produced allowing for a contractor to do a cost for the implementation of the project.
